Health Data: A Federal View on Maximizing Its Value A Conversation between Sanjay Koyani of HHS and Joel Gurin of CODE

The Health Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) annual meeting is one of the largest healthcare gatherings of the year. On May 28, 2020 Sanjay Koyani, Executive Director for Innovation in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and Joel Gurin, President of the Center for Open Data Enterprise (CODE), held what HIMSS calls an “Essential Conversation”  on Maximizing Value from Government Health Data: A Federal View.

They discussed how health and medical progress depends on the ability to share and use big data with a many stakeholders. They also reflected on the year-long collaboration between CODE and HHS to improve data sharing for research, diagnosis, treatment, and healthcare delivery. That project brought together stakeholders in HHS, academia, civil society, and the private sector to discuss health data sharing. Those conversations touched on Artificial Intelligence, the social determinants of health, and privacy.

This transcript of their conversation, presented here with the permission of HIMSS, has been edited slightly for clarity and flow. To learn more about this HIMSS digital program, please visit the HIMSS20 website.
